We visited Colwyn Fireplace Centre with an open mind and with only a vague idea about what we required to install in three old fireplaces in the main Portmeirion Hotel during a planned maintenance window scheduled for January 2010. It was important that not only did they have a practical use, but it was imperative that they fitted in with aesthetics of the Mirror Room, Library and Peacock Suite. Our first impression was the quite excellent and comprehensive range of items on display.

I have now had 3 new fireplaces – 2 gas and 1 electric – installed by the Colwyn Fireplace Centre and am very happy with all of them. This has been a long and complex process, due to getting chimney liners fitted by my local builder, purchasing Selkirk boxes from the Plumb Centre and then getting the fitters to install the gas fires. Staff at the showroom have been extremely helpful with technical advice and sales support, guiding me through the process of choosing the various components, and sourcing custom sizes for the marble. The key to the success of the installations in an old house, with thick stone walls, has been the competency and experience of the fitters. Not only did they do a good job, excavating a skip’s worth of rubble in the process, but crucially, they knew how to deal with sloping floors and ensured that extra concrete was used to make the fireplace bases level. They took the time to make sure the job was done correctly. When it transpired that one hearth was 2 inches too short to cover an existing base, they took it back to the shop and ordered a bespoke size at no extra cost before continuing the job. When one wall was so out-of-true for the mantle surround, the fitter supplied an experienced plasterer to feather the wall to the surround and complete a professional job. I would have no hesitation in recommending this firm and, indeed, I will be back for a 4th fireplace soon!
